Contemporary West Hollywood Spanish

This tiny Spanish bungalow, situated on an open corner in West Hollywood, felt over-exposed to the world, and provided the homeowners with no outdoor gathering or resting areas. The entire property was recaptured by enclosing it in a stucco-covered block retaining wall with a planted hedge atop the wall. A new, more sophisticated and private gated entrance was created, allowing the space inside the walls to become a front yard patio. With the additional enclosure of the driveway, a whole new dining and entertainment area has been developed from their previously unused driveway and front hillside.

The custom-hewn Three Rivers stone, with its velvety, rich mocha and evening-sky hues, is used in the front entry to invite visitors to the door and into the entertainment areas. This elegant natural stone was selected over the tempting, but ubiquitous, terracotta alternatives. The colors of the paving are echoed in the palette selected for the residence, including warm golds, dusky purples, and the whimsical pale lavender wall enclosing the property. All of these colors enhance the climate-appropriate Mediterranean plant palette with its gray and olive-tone leaves.
