Hollywoodland Residence

Perched on a Hollywood Hills ridge, this original Hollywoodland 1920's Spanish hacienda awaited its present owner to develop a garden in the weedy space adjacent to the original pool terrace.

Our challenge was to create a completely immersive garden without diminishing the 360 degree views of Los Angeles. The formal axis laid out by the Utah Buff sandstone walkways is subverted by the fluid Mediterranean plantings. From every aspect of the garden a visitor feels embraced by nature, yet able to appreciate from afar the beauty of our urban metropolis.

A Utah Buff sandstone bench invites lingering in the shade of established pittosporum trees. This relaxing retreat is one of two areas in the garden large enough to accomodate dining tables and chairs. The landscape lighting is enhanced by a collection of custom antique globes converted to low-voltage fixtures and hung from trees. The pond supports goldfish and waterlillies, and the sound of water flowing gently from the antique amphora fills the entire terrace area.

At night the landscape lighting creates a magical environment, seemingly on top of the world.
